On Saturday Feb 26, we found thousands of birds on Thompson Lake. We stopped at the only shoulder on IL 78 Hwy, across from Dickson Mounds (County 9) Road. It was overcast and foggy in the distance, but we couldn't miss this large flock of geese.
All of a sudden, they rose from the water, circled around, and then settled down again.
On Monday, Feb 28, I went back and the geese put on an even more spectacular show.

Every time I checked back last week, there were geese on the water and/or flying overhead.

I had no idea there were such fantastic scenes in Illinois. Thank you for sharing this. This rivals what I traveled thousands of miles and spent thousands of dollars to see in Kenya two summers ago (Lake Nakuru) - this was, in some ways, even more amazing!
This phenomenal movement of Snow Geese occurs in the spring, as the geese move north to their breeding grounds. In the fall they straggle back a few at a time, in flocks with other geese.
The best time to view the geese at Emiquon is in late February/early March. However, you ca come to the newly constructed visitor center to see what is happening all year long. There is always something amazing happening at Emiquon.
